It is situated in the City of Westminster. At its centre is Nelson’s Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. There are a number of commemorative statues and sculptures in the square, while one plinth, left empty since it was built in 1840, The Fourth Plinth, has been host to contemporary art since 1999. The square is also used for political demonstrations and community gatherings, such as the celebration of New Year’s Eve.
If the weather’s okay, you can spend a pleasant hour taking in Nelson’s Column, the lions and whatever’s on the fourth plinth. Nelson’s Column harkens back to England’s mighty naval supremacy, spot the fire damage to the fountains perimeter – caused by fires lit in celebrations after WWII and pop into the NPG. The statues within the square are iconic, the lions are quite majestic. Note the large lions surrounding the obelisk– they are made from melted French cannons! Its great to see how the empty 4th plinth has been given over to modern art installations, the latest offering is a rather large thumb!!
No trip to London is complete without a quick stop in Trafalgar Square to see what’s going on. There are always street artists, living statues, a limbo dancer and various other people doing their thing. The street artists and performers are always talented, the views of Big Ben and the London Eye are best from the steps of the National Gallery, the mix of old and new is quite stunning.
It is full of tourists and Londoners alike and is not to be missed.
